Buckingham Primary Nursery

Rooms and your Key Person

We have four rooms in our setting. The Chicks room for our children from six to eighteen months, the Cygnets room is for our eighteen months to two and a half years old, the Swans room is home to our two and a half to younger three year olds and our Pre-School is for our children who will join school the next academic year.

A key person is crucial in a nursery for providing emotional security, continuity of care, and individualised support for your child. They build a strong, trusting relationship with the child and their family, acting as a consistent point of contact who understands the child's needs, observes their development, and helps them settle into the setting. This approach helps children feel secure, build confidence, and thrive, and it ensures that their learning is tailored to their unique interests and abilities.

Benefits for the child

Emotional security: The key person provides a stable and nurturing relationship, which helps the child feel safe and secure when away from home. This allows the child to build confidence and resilience.

Settling in: They are the primary support during the settling-in process, working with the child to help them become familiar with the nursery environment and routines.

Individualised care: By observing and getting to know the child, the key person can tailor activities and support to their specific interests, stage of development, and needs.

Support for learning: A close relationship with a key person helps children learn more effectively because they are in a secure, happy environment where their needs are met.

Benefits for the family

Consistent communication: The key person acts as a primary point of contact, providing parents with regular updates on their child's progress and well-being.

Home-nursery partnership: They build a partnership with parents, sharing insights into the child's learning at nursery and offering suggestions for how parents can support that learning at home.

Reassurance: Knowing their child has a special, nurturing relationship with a consistent adult can be reassuring for parents as their child adjusts to nursery life.
